BitTorrent Will Release P2P Social Media App, BitTorrent Live in Q2 2019

According to a press release published on March 27, the peer-to-peer sharing platform has offered early access to the BitTorrent Live streaming service today. The app would be a video-based social media platform purportedly similar to Snapchat and TikTok that will allow its users to create live content and connect with other people through their mobile devices.

Though much awaited, the BitTorrent Live is not actually new.  Bram Cohen, the author of BitTorrent stated way back in 2012, that his goal with the platform was “to kill off the television.” Notably, the software isn’t a new one, its character has changed much over time.

Initially, the first version of BitTorrent Live was mostly just a new content delivery protocol and definitely not a social media app. This version was shut down after a failed attempt of fundraising by the company, in order to spin it off as an independent business in April 2017.
